vivanews - Indonesia undergoes talks on the possibility of signing an MoU with the Saudi Arabian government on the monitoring of Indonesian migrant workers as an attempt to minimize acts of violence as was committed against Sumiati, an Indonesian maid working in the country.
Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said Saudi Arabia has no MoU with any country on migrant workers in the informal sector. "We'll keep trying on making possible the signing of such an MoU," Marty told reporters today, Nov 19.
The MoU underscores an important issue than workers in the informal sector, especially at homes, must be monitored. "This is quite a challenge," he said.
The majority of Indonesian migrant workers earning a living abroad do not deal with problems. Nonetheless, the government are struggling to protect workers from acts of violence.
He goes along with the Amnesty International which has condemned such an act of violence committed against Sumiati.
As reported earlier, Sumiati, the daughter of Salan Mustapa, was brutally abused by her employer after three months of working in a family in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
She suffers from severe burn injuries. Both her legs are nearly paralyzed. Her upper lip was cut.
