Volcanic mudflow streamed through Putih River in Yogyakarta ruining around 70 homes. The flash flood caused 1,188 inhabitants living by the riverside to flee their dwellings.
Victims of the flooding take refuge in Jumoyo local administration's hall, a school building and mosque. "We're keeping on acquiring data as to how many homes are damaged by the flooding," local disaster management's spokesperson Heri Prawoto told VIVAnews today, Jan 4.
Gempol Hamlet and Jumoyo Village are the worst area affected by the mudflow. "In Sirahan Village, there are homes that are inundated by half a meter high of water," he said.
The mudflow was a result of high precipitation taking place on the peak of Mt Merapi.
