JAKARTA – The Indonesian government continues to evacuate its citizens from Libya due to increasing tension between Libyans and Muammar Gaddafi.
Of the 875 Indonesians living in Libya, 130 are students. Despite the political turmoil, however, many students opt to stay within the country.
“They want to stay because many are working their university theses,” said foreign department spokesperson Michael Tenne.
“Nevertheless, the government will continue to try and evacuate them to Tunisia – at least until the crisis in Libya subsides.”
According to Kusuma Habir, the foreign department’s diplomacy director, Indonesian citizens were evacuated from Tripoli to Tunis via Tunis Air. The first flight , carrying 260 Indonesians from PT Wijaya Karya and PT Pertamina, departed last Friday.
