Indian Ocean has long been a strategic trade routes of the world's countries. However, safety and navigational issues are still happening in this region.

Therefore, the Australian Defence Minister, Duncan Lewis, encouraging Asia to build a multilateral maritime security architecture in the Indian Ocean. Hopefully, it can solve various problems, such as piracy and smuggling of weapons.

"Indies have a major effect because the countries in the region have an interest, either internal or multilateral, which can attract other marine interests. Indian military could also be a very big house, therefore, its safety is crucial," Lewis said in his speech at the Jakarta International Defense Dialogue, Thursday, March 22, 2012.

He stressed that the Indian security in the military and the defense had only touched the surface. Therefore, the government agency the Indian nations, especially in the Asia Pacific region, should take a more in depth in order to maintain the Indies.

"For example, for merchant ships, many of which pass through the same route that must be considered. Competence and conditions of the workers and the companies that sent them must be ensured because it is important to build trust," added Lewis.

Related problem of piracy, he also praised Indonesia and Malaysia are considered successful in dealing with piracy in Somalia. Australia also supports Indonesia to replace India as the new chairman of the organizational countries of the Pacific later.
