JAKARTA - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Vice Chairman Lukman Hakim Saefuddin said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono should be wise in relation with the special status of Yogyakarta province.
Lukman expressed hope that President Yudhoyono's explanation about the case at the cabinet meeting on Thursday (Dec.2) afternoon could mitigate and resolve the polemics.
"What we need at present is the wisdom of the president, and we hope he will resolve the situation this afternoon by showing his commitment to maintaining Yogyakarta's special status," Lukman said.
According to the politician of the United Development Party (PPP), a referendum on Yogyakarta's special region status was not necessary because it would jeopardize the Unitary State of the Indonesian Republic (NKRI).
Moreover, it was clear that the people of Yogyakarta wanted Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X to remain governor.
"It is quite clear that the majority of Yogyakarta people want Sri Sultan to remain governor, and a referendum would be a threat to the NKRI," Lukman said.
Meanwhile, President Yudhoyono held a special meeting with Vice President Boediono before he was to issue a statement about the bill on Yogyakarta's special status.
The meeting with Boediono started at 11 am at and was also o attended by six other ministers.
After the special meeting with the vice president, the head of state was scheduled to chair a limited cabinet meeting at 2 on Thursday afternoon before issuing a statement about the bill on Yogyakarta's special status which had triggered polemics over the past few days.
Earlier, there had been an unconfirmed report that Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X would be summoned by the president to the State Palace at 2 pm on Thursday but the report was denied by presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha.
"No, it is not true that Sri Sultan has been summoned by President Yudhoyono," Julian said.
