MEDAN, North SUMATERA – Despite Langkat budget suspect Syamsul Arifin is now serving his second arrest period for twenty days deal with interrogation by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the North Sumatera governor might put in custody even longer.
Aldian Pinem, the head of non-governmental organization for legal and political protection popularly called PHP, said that Syamsul likely questioned for more than 60 days. “The corruption chapter in the Criminal Code possible this procedure,” he told Waspada Online here.
The Criminal Code states that graft actor could be sentenced for nine years behind the bars or being arrested for 60 days to 500 days.
“The procedure very likely imposed due to KPK attempt to gather more evidences,” he explained on Tuesday (Dec.7).
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Friday detained North Sumatra governor Syamsul Arifin in connection with corruption he allegedly committed during his tenure as Langkat regent from 2000 to 2007.
Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) assessment, in an audit held at March 16, 2009, indicated the misuse of Langkat regency budget funds totaling Rp101 billion (about US$10.1 million) between 2000 and 2007.
Rumor of Syamsul involvement in the bribery case arise as he returned Rp62,352,312,923 trillion for KPK on December 3, 2009.
Syamsul led Langkat regency for two consecutive terms from 1998 to 2008, after which he was elected as the North Sumatra governor for the 2009-2013 term through a direct election.
