Villages situated on the steeps of Indonesian volcano Merapi may be hit by volcanic mudflow during the coming wet season between December and February.

Chief of Volcanology Technology Development and Assessment Agency, Subandrio, reminded that wet season may push forward volcanic mudflow to occur.

“A simple early warning system that are easily comprehended by people and volunteers must be set up,” he said today, Nov 25.

Moreover, the Geophysics, Climatology and Meteorology Agency predicted that high precipitation will take place between November and February at 500 mm. In fact, the volcanic mudflow may form under mild precipitation of 40-70 mm.

Volcanic materials are still around on the areas 15 kilometers away from the Merapi peak at 94 million cubic meters.

Some villages and hamlets are under red zone category such as Palemsari and Pangukrejo hamlets in Umbulharjo Village; Kaliadem, Jambu, Petung, Kopeng, Batur, Manggong hamlets in Kepuharjo Village; Kalitengah, Kalikidul, Srunen, Singlar, Glagahmalang, Ngancar hamlets in Glagaharjo Village; Suruh, Bakalan, Ngepringan hamlets in Argomulyo Village; and Gungan, Pusung, Gadingan, Benaran and Cakran hamlets in Wukirsari Village.

12 villages in Srumbung Subdistrict, Magelang, are also prone to massive volcanic mudflow.

Even the ancient city of Yogyakarta may not be free from the future threat of the mudflow.

A spokesperson of the Yogyakarta administration, Bayudono, said an authorized institution will be identifying critical spots of avalanches and water runoff. The institution will also conduct surveys over housing areas that are affected by water and mud.

Small channels will also be established on some upstream areas.
