Dual Impacts of Jakarta Vehicle Restriction

Friday, December 3, 2010 | 6:16 AM WIB | 2 Views Last Updated 2010-12-03T12:17:15Z
The growth rate of private automobiles in Jakarta has considerably hiked that the central government is insisted to implement vehicle restriction in no time.

However, the plan to restrict vehicles in Jakarta may be both benefiting and smashing the central and provincial governments because it will lessen the amount of revenue gained from taxes.

"Jakarta has been overloaded with vehicles," said Jakarta Police Director of Traffic, Chief Comm. Royke Lumowa, today, Dec 3.

He said the central government must be bold in issuing policy as an attempt to reduce automotive products despite possible cut in employment and taxes. "Jakarta collects Rp 6 trillion per year from vehicle tax. The restriction will cut the income by Rp 3 trillion," said Royke.

This will be a difficult situation for the central government, he said. "But I believe that the government will have the venture to apply the regulation," he went on.

Prior to bringing about the regulation, decent public transportation such as busway, subway and monorail must have been available.

Mass transportation in Jakarta only gets the small portion of 1.5 percent compared to private vehicles of 98.5 percent.

In addition to restricting the number of private vehicles, the Jakarta administration are trying to handle traffic congestion in the short run.

Data of the Jakarta Police Department reveals that 3,118,050 units of automobiles and 8,244,346 units of motorbikes pack the streets of Jakarta.

Vehicle growth rate is recorded at 15 percent per year.

Added into Jakarta administration's concern is the rapid growth of population in the Indonesian capital.

Based on the Census of Population 2010, the number of Jakarta inhabitants hits 9.6 million.

Earlier, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said vehicle restriction is not under the authority of Jakarta administration.
