The new technology will seemingly lead to the adjustment in the pricing of new passport.
Justice and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar said the Indonesian government sees a chance to issue electronic passport (e-passport). As a start, three cities are chosen to implement the new breakthrough.
"Immigration offices in Jakarta, Semarang and Surabaya will be pioneering the e-passport implementation. We'll fully launch the product by 2015," said Patrialis in Jakarta today, Dec 10.
The e-passport is the same as a regular passport with the addition of a small contactless integrated circuit (computer chip) embedded in the back cover. The chip securely stores the same data visually displayed on the photo page of the passport, and additionally includes a digital photograph.
Patrialis said that the international Civil Aviation Organization has agreed that the e-passport use is to be applied in 2015 internationally.
Indonesia is, even only among other Southeast Asian countries like Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, left behind on the e-passport implementation.
The new technology will seemingly lead to the adjustment in the pricing of new passport, which is estimated to reach Rp 600 thousand.
